MAC "Cook Out" - Judge's comments
Sunny skies, braaivleis, boerewors, chicken, oxtail, venison and seafood, were the order of the day for the MAC "Cooked on Coals" competition, in celebration of National Heritage day on Monday 24 September 2012. Thank you to all the members who entered teams and to those who came along and joined in the spirit of the day's fun. MAC was alive with enthusiastic cooks, whose meals were most innovative, tasty and some rather chilli 'hot'. In the presentation and tasting of these meals, one could well imagine that some of these cooks could well have missed their professions in life! Not every meal cooked on coals could be the final inner, but they did all deserve to be winners. Judging the teams was in itself an hilarious task for the judges, apart from all the banter and bribes made, the nose twitching aromas and tasted samples were delicious, which made choosing a winner a daunting task. There was a table set with silver and crystal, fit for a queen, even strawberries and cream, the team said that they always had braais like that! The way the rugby boys do things - biltong, tjops, boerewors and beers appeared to be the theme of a number of teams. In one instance, a team was attempting to 'sell' other than meat. Due to the smoke from all the various braai fires, while tasting one team's chicken meal, it was a guess as to whether the smoke was actually in the taste of the chicken or in the air. There was also a team taking advantage of being beside the seaside, while their food was being prepared 'a la galley'. In tasting the seafood, the judges were assured that it was 'legal'. A number of teams were most adept at handling knives and potato peelers, even though two cooks nicked their fingers with sharp knives and required plasters. Enjoying the traditional meal of a foreign country was an experience of sailing away to another land, that the judges would have liked to share with everyone present. The yachts were lovely and the meal could have been enjoyed for hours, but time was running out the judges had to move on. However, being in S.A. and celebrating a traditional braai day, the call of the wild was difficult to ignore, with its meal of game, warthog tusk cutlery and proteas, which, incidentally, the club staff remarked, that according to their traditional customs, the team's table was 'traditional'. What better way to end the day than with the rendition of "Ag Please Daddy", with the young children joining in the singing, even though many of them have never seen a 'drive-in' nor a Chevrolet - fun was had by all.
Thank you to MAC, Denice and Clinton, and the sponsors of the prizes, the teams and all the members, friends and visitors that made MAC Heritage Day, a day not to forget.

It seems we have more teams that we thought and some of the teams sound massive! We wish we had braai's for everyone and really don't want to begin the day stressing over braais, so if you can make a plan, you will be doing yourself and everyone else a favor - bring a braai if you can!
